Minecraft copper age tutorial
The Minecraft Copper Age update (1.21.9) introduces a variety of new features, blocks, and items centered around the versatile copper metal.
Here is a tutorial and overview of the main features, including the Copper Golem and Copper Chest:
New Features in the Copper Age Update
1. The Copper Golem
The Copper Golem is a new utility mob that specializes in item sorting.
-
How to Craft (Summon):
- Place a Copper Block (any oxidization level) on the ground.
- Place a Carved Pumpkin on top of the Copper Block.
- This will summon a Copper Golem and automatically give you your first Copper Chest.
- You can also use a Jack O'Lantern or a plain pumpkin and shears.
-
Item Sorting Functionality:
- The Golem's main job is to remove items from Copper Chests and sort them into nearby regular chests.
- It will take out up to 16 items from a Copper Chest.
- It will only place items into a nearby chest if that chest already contains an item that matches what the Golem is holding.
- If a nearby chest is empty, the Golem will use it to start a new sorting category for the item it is holding.
- It can sort any stackable or non-stackable item in the game.
-
Oxidation and Preservation:
- Like other copper blocks, the Copper Golem will oxidize (turn green) over time.
- You can use a Honeycomb on the Golem to wax it, preserving its current oxidation state.
- You can use an Axe on the Golem to remove one layer of oxidation.
2. Copper Chest
The Copper Chest is a new storage block primarily designed to work with the Copper Golem.
-
How to Craft:
- Combine one normal Chest with Copper Ingots in a crafting table to get an unoxidized Copper Chest.
- Alternatively, you receive one when you summon a Copper Golem.
-
Functionality:
- It functions exactly like a normal chest in terms of inventory size and use, but with a different aesthetic and sound.
- It is the only type of chest that the Copper Golem will pull items out of for sorting.
- It comes in four different oxidization levels and can be waxed or scraped with an Axe.
3. Copper Golem Statue
When a Copper Golem fully oxidizes, it turns into a new block called the Copper Golem Statue.
-
How to Obtain:
- Allow a Copper Golem to fully oxidize (turn green).
- It will then lock up, freeze, and become the statue block.
-
Functionality:
- You can interact with the statue to pose it in four different ways: standing, sitting, running, or jumping.
- It has Redstone functionality via a Comparator, emitting a signal strength from 1 to 4 depending on its pose.
- Scraping the fully oxidized statue with an Axe one step further will turn it back into a living Copper Golem.
4. Copper Tools and Armor
The update also adds an entirely new tier of tools and armor made from copper.
-
Tools (Sword, Axe, Pickaxe, Shovel, Hoe):
- Crafting recipes are the same as other tool sets, using Copper Ingots and Sticks.
- Copper tools are slightly less durable and have less attack damage than iron tools, but are still a strong option for the early game.
-
Armor (Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, Boots):
- Crafted like other armor sets, using Copper Ingots.
- Offers protection slightly below that of Iron Armor.
-
Copper Horse Armor:
- This item cannot be crafted; it must be found as loot in various structures (similar to other horse armor).
5. New Copper Blocks & Lights
Copper can now be used to create new light sources and decorative blocks:

6. The Shelf Block
This new storage block is perfect for decoration and inventory management.
-
How to Craft:
- Use six Stripped Logs of any wood type. You get six shelves per recipe.
-
Functionality:
- The shelf has three slots for items.
- To place an item, look at a slot while holding the item and interact. It can hold a full stack of items in each slot.
- To retrieve an item, interact with an empty hand.
- To swap items (for utility), interact with an item in your hand; the items will instantly swap.
- Redstone Integration: The shelf emits a Redstone signal via a Comparator based on which slots have items, using binary code (Slot 1 = 1, Slot 2 = 2, Slot 3 = 4, for a max signal of 7).
